5 great living room makeover ideas for tight budgets

It’s easy to think that completely making over your living room will be very expensive, but with a bit of canny thinking, it doesn’t have to be. Here are five great ways to transform your lounge and give it the wow factor on a tight budget.

1) Create a standout feature

One of the best ways to add a bit of interest to your living room is by emphasising one part of it to create a focal point. For example, if your fireplace currently blends in with the rest of the room, you could paint it a different colour or re-tile it so it becomes the first thing your visitors’ eyes are drawn to.

Other features you could revamp in this way include the window; buy or make some eye-catching curtains and decorate the sill with pretty ornaments or flowers. A single wall can be transformed by painting or papering it differently to the other walls to create a feature wall, while the floor could be restored, re-covered with a new carpet or rug, or replaced. If you like the look of wood flooring, for example, but can’t afford a solid wood floor, consider laminate flooring from a retailer likeĀ UK Flooring Direct.

2) Change the layout

You’d be amazed at how much of a difference simply changing the position of your sofas and other furniture can make. If you want to be ultra organised, draw up a plan showing your lounge from above, making a note of the position of windows, doors, power points and anything else that can’t be moved.

Then, create different layouts to see what your options are, and put the most appealing ones into practice for a day or so to check that they actually work. Playing with the layout in this way could create space you never knew you had, or highlight any pieces of furniture that you don’t actually need and could get rid of.

3) Add interesting wall decor

Artwork is a great way to liven up your living room without spending a fortune. Markets, charity shops and websites like eBay and Craigslist can all throw up great art finds for a low price. You could also consider commissioning a local artist to paint something specific for you; the cost will vary depending on the artist.

Aside from framed art and canvas prints, other ways to make your walls look more interesting include using an eye-catching mirror or clock to create a focal point that lifts the eye up, and taking advantage of wall stickers for a quirkier style. These are cheap and easily removable, so you can change them whenever you like.

4) Replace small accessories

It’s a fact that small details really do make a room, so consider replacing the smaller accessories and fittings in your lounge to change its style. As well as changing things like your cushions, lamps, place settings (if you have a dining table in your living room) and vases, you could invest in new door and window handles, for example.

Either keep your old accessories in storage in case you feel like changing your living room again in the future, or sell them to generate more money for your new goodies.

5) Overhaul your furniture

Why buy new furniture when you could transform your living room with what you’ve already got? Re-painting wooden furniture and buying new covers for sofas and chairs can really make a difference – and is much cheaper than investing in all-new pieces.

The other great thing about going down this route is the fact that you can customise your furniture to your own needs, resulting in a truly unique room that reflects your personality.
